Narrative:
En route iah to mia at FL290, approximately 120 NM southeast of msy, flight attendant reported engines were louder than usual. All engine indications appeared normal. First officer went to rear and noted that left engine did seem louder than normal. Approximately 3-5 mins later left engine failed instantaneously. Declared an emergency and proceeded direct msy for an ILS runway 10. Approach and landing uneventful.

Title: INFLT ENG FAILURE AND DIVERSION TO ALTERNATE IN A SUPER 80.
Narrative: ENRTE IAH TO MIA AT FL290, APPROX 120 NM SE OF MSY, FLT ATTENDANT RPTED ENGS WERE LOUDER THAN USUAL. ALL ENG INDICATIONS APPEARED NORMAL. FO WENT TO REAR AND NOTED THAT L ENG DID SEEM LOUDER THAN NORMAL. APPROX 3-5 MINS LATER L ENG FAILED INSTANTANEOUSLY. DECLARED AN EMER AND PROCEEDED DIRECT MSY FOR AN ILS RWY 10. APCH AND LNDG UNEVENTFUL.
