Narrative:
Air carrier X after landing on runway 18R, we turned off on E4 and turned north on taxiway east and stopped to wait for taxi instructions. Tower frequency was very congested, so we switched to ground control to hear them calling our flight number. We were instructed to follow our company dc-9, that had just landed on runway 23 north on taxiway east across runway 23. We started across runway 23 northbound following the dc-9 and were told 'hold short' after we were on the runway. We informed ground control that we were already on the runway, and were then told to expedite crossing. I noticed a light twin engine aircraft pull up and execute a go around from approach to runway 23 at this same time. I feel that there was no conflict, and the twin engine could have easily landed on runway 23 and held way short of taxiway east, if necessary. Charlotte tower was trying to cram too many airplanes in at one time. Our 757 can't expedite taxi like smaller aircraft either.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LIGHT TWIN ISSUED GAR DUE TO ACR X RWY INCURSION.
Narrative: ACR X AFTER LNDG ON RWY 18R, WE TURNED OFF ON E4 AND TURNED N ON TXWY E AND STOPPED TO WAIT FOR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. TWR FREQ WAS VERY CONGESTED, SO WE SWITCHED TO GND CTL TO HEAR THEM CALLING OUR FLT NUMBER. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW OUR COMPANY DC-9, THAT HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 23 N ON TXWY E ACROSS RWY 23. WE STARTED ACROSS RWY 23 NBOUND FOLLOWING THE DC-9 AND WERE TOLD 'HOLD SHORT' AFTER WE WERE ON THE RWY. WE INFORMED GND CTL THAT WE WERE ALREADY ON THE RWY, AND WERE THEN TOLD TO EXPEDITE XING. I NOTICED A LIGHT TWIN ENG ACFT PULL UP AND EXECUTE A GAR FROM APCH TO RWY 23 AT THIS SAME TIME. I FEEL THAT THERE WAS NO CONFLICT, AND THE TWIN ENG COULD HAVE EASILY LANDED ON RWY 23 AND HELD WAY SHORT OF TXWY E, IF NECESSARY. CHARLOTTE TWR WAS TRYING TO CRAM TOO MANY AIRPLANES IN AT ONE TIME. OUR 757 CAN'T EXPEDITE TAXI LIKE SMALLER ACFT EITHER.
