Narrative:

I was PF flight, scheduled service from sps to dfw. We had deviated north of course as we worked ourselves around a line of thunderstorms between sps and dfw. Cruising at 7000 ft, we encountered a strong downdraft. We had maximum climb power and were descending at about 200 FPM. We leveled off at 6500 ft MSL and advised ATC of the problem. We returned to 7000 ft as soon as possible. At time of downdraft we were in an area of VMC with the nearest thunderstorm cell about 13 mi south of us. We had cells at 20 mi to the north of our position also. As we entered the downdraft no turbulence was noticed.
