Narrative:

Air carrier X climbing swbound with clearance to FL270. ZFW suddenly asked us to stop our climb at FL190 and turn right to 300 degrees. (We were passing FL195 at the time of his request.) I immediately selected altitude hold on the flight guidance panel and began a 30 degree bank turn to 300 degrees. The controller told us that a B727 was south of us and was climbing and looked slower than we were. He indicated that he had thought he told us to stop our climb at FL170. Our clearance was to FL270 and neither crew member heard any directive to amend the altitude clearance.
