Narrative:
Cleared to land runway 21 at dca. From 100 ft before touchdown, tower instructed me to go around and enter a right downwind for runway 15, and there was traffic on 3 mi final for runway 18. I acknowledged. In the melee that followed, 2 to 3 other aircraft either had to go around or maneuver for spacing (my go around was due to faster traffic on short final for runway 18). There were landing clrncs given to other aircraft for runways 15, 18, and 21. On my downwind I was very concerned about my close proximity to the prohibited areas at the capital. In this position I allowed myself to become disorientated and inadvertently turned base for, and overshot final to runway 18. At this point I knew something looked very wrong. Tower asked the air carrier jet if they had the aztec (us) in sight. The reply was an obviously annoyed yes. At the same time I had begun a right bank because I was left of final for runway 18. I saw the air carrier jet at my 4-5 O'clock low when the tower was asking the jet if they saw us. The tower asked me to level off and re-enter the pattern over midfield for a right crosswind on runway 15. I complied. I kept the runway in sight. The tower cleared us to land, and we did so without incident. This was only my 2ND time into dca alone and probably only my 4TH or 5TH time ever. I allowed myself to become overloaded.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PART 135 AZTEC PLT BECAME DISORIENTED AFTER A GAR AT A HIGH TFC DENSITY ARPT. CONFLICT RESULTED WHEN ACFT OVERSHOT FINAL APCH.
Narrative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
