Narrative:
Was assigned holding going into ord. On first captain trip after IOE and first holding event after spending 8 yrs in FMC equipped aircraft. Aircraft was at minimum fuel for ord and was coordinating with dispatch for new alternate. First officer was low time (over 100 hours) but on reserve. We entered hold wrong direction, but on correct side (clearance was for turns in either direction). By the time I realized that we were going wrong way, we were taken out of holding.
