Narrative:
Departure control issued a change in altitude and heading. Was originally assigned 2500 ft, heading 250 degrees. This would have been no problem. However, departure control changed this to climb to 6500 ft heading 350 degrees. This clearance resulted in crossing the departure ends of runways 30R and 30L where the situation occurred. Departed runway 24 at stl. Tower assigned heading of 250 degrees altitude 2500 ft. Departure control changed heading to 350 degrees altitude 6500 ft. After turning to 350 degrees, observed dc-9 at same altitude. After takeoff from runway 30L. Turned to 260 degrees to miss airliner. Captain reported his conflict. Alert activated indicating an aircraft at same altitude, he initiated a climb. Departure control stated they had a problem in the tower. I was then assigned heading 250 degree altitude 7000 ft. No further mention of incident throughout flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMT HAS NMAC WITH MLG ON DEP WHILE ON RADAR VECTORS.
Narrative: DEP CTL ISSUED A CHANGE IN ALT AND HDG. WAS ORIGINALLY ASSIGNED 2500 FT, HDG 250 DEGS. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN NO PROB. HOWEVER, DEP CTL CHANGED THIS TO CLB TO 6500 FT HDG 350 DEGS. THIS CLRNC RESULTED IN XING THE DEP ENDS OF RWYS 30R AND 30L WHERE THE SIT OCCURRED. DEPARTED RWY 24 AT STL. TWR ASSIGNED HDG OF 250 DEGS ALT 2500 FT. DEP CTL CHANGED HDG TO 350 DEGS ALT 6500 FT. AFTER TURNING TO 350 DEGS, OBSERVED DC-9 AT SAME ALT. AFTER TKOF FROM RWY 30L. TURNED TO 260 DEGS TO MISS AIRLINER. CAPT RPTED HIS CONFLICT. ALERT ACTIVATED INDICATING AN ACFT AT SAME ALT, HE INITIATED A CLB. DEP CTL STATED THEY HAD A PROB IN THE TWR. I WAS THEN ASSIGNED HDG 250 DEG ALT 7000 FT. NO FURTHER MENTION OF INCIDENT THROUGHOUT FLT.
