Narrative:
I was on an IFR flight plan to rkd and I was cleared for the localizer 6. I started my descent and then the approach clearance was canceled. It was VFR so I canceled, but I advised there was a jet departing in the opposite direction so I stayed with approach for new vectors and climbed back to 2000 ft as assigned. I was realigned for the approach and was told to switch to the advisory frequency. After checking for traffic with approach, I canceled IFR and switched to advisory approximately 8 mi out. I was told the airport was closing in 5 mins for an airshow and I said I'd be landing in 3 mins. I successively reported inbound at 3 mi, 1 mi, back taxing, and clear of the runway. Although I did identify the airport as both rockland and knox county (I believe the official name is knox county) after shutdown I confirmed that there were no 'D' NOTAMS advising of the airport closure, no published NOTAMS. Only a (left) NOTAM saying there would be an aerobatic demonstration and avoidance was recommended. Somebody dropped the ball and it wasn't me.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A PVT SMA TWIN FINDS OUT FROM ARPT UNICOM OPERATOR ON FINAL APCH THAT THE ARPT IS CLOSING IN 5 MINS!
Narrative: I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN TO RKD AND I WAS CLRED FOR THE LOC 6. I STARTED MY DSCNT AND THEN THE APCH CLRNC WAS CANCELED. IT WAS VFR SO I CANCELED, BUT I ADVISED THERE WAS A JET DEPARTING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION SO I STAYED WITH APCH FOR NEW VECTORS AND CLBED BACK TO 2000 FT AS ASSIGNED. I WAS REALIGNED FOR THE APCH AND WAS TOLD TO SWITCH TO THE ADVISORY FREQ. AFTER CHKING FOR TFC WITH APCH, I CANCELED IFR AND SWITCHED TO ADVISORY APPROX 8 MI OUT. I WAS TOLD THE ARPT WAS CLOSING IN 5 MINS FOR AN AIRSHOW AND I SAID I'D BE LNDG IN 3 MINS. I SUCCESSIVELY RPTED INBOUND AT 3 MI, 1 MI, BACK TAXING, AND CLR OF THE RWY. ALTHOUGH I DID IDENT THE ARPT AS BOTH ROCKLAND AND KNOX COUNTY (I BELIEVE THE OFFICIAL NAME IS KNOX COUNTY) AFTER SHUTDOWN I CONFIRMED THAT THERE WERE NO 'D' NOTAMS ADVISING OF THE ARPT CLOSURE, NO PUBLISHED NOTAMS. ONLY A (L) NOTAM SAYING THERE WOULD BE AN AEROBATIC DEMONSTRATION AND AVOIDANCE WAS RECOMMENDED. SOMEBODY DROPPED THE BALL AND IT WASN'T ME.
