Narrative:

Northbound at FL310 on G432, a large and intense area of cumulo nimbus and thunderstorm activity straddled the airway. Requested east deviation through HF radio, had to start deviation before, ATC communications relay delays told us we could not deviate east. At that time we were committed and used captain's emergency authority/authorized to deviation east until we could get through a break and get back to the airway. Much more deviating with ATC approval, eventually went so far west we rerted onto A523 to complete the flight. ATC did have a potential traffic conflict but changed his altitude to solve that problem. Another flight also had to use captain emergency authority/authorized to deviate in that area.
