Narrative:
Dc-10-30, needed a tire replaced on the center gear. Brakes were off for fueling and main wheels chocked. We were using maintenance manual 32-41-02. Could not get center gear to come up for tire change. Captain in cockpit asked if I wanted the center gear switched in the up position. I replied 'yes,' (not knowing this was a lock out switch). The gear did not move, I asked for the switch back in the normal position. Gear did not move. I requested for the gear handle placed in the down position so we could start over with this sequence. Fluid started running out of the center gear wheel well, had cockpit shut off hydraulics. The center gear retract cylinder piston was bent in the extend position. Maintenance manual 32-41-02 gives several ways to bring the center gear up. Should only be 1 method, no alternates. Captain should not have asked if we wanted the center gear up switch in the up position. A third mechanic in cockpit would have been useful. Aircraft was loaded with passenger and 1 FAA pilot check inspector in cockpit.

MAINT MANUAL 32-41-02 GIVES SEVERAL WAYS TO BRING THE CTR GEAR UP. SHOULD ONLY BE 1 METHOD, NO ALTERNATES. CAPT SHOULD NOT HAVE ASKED IF WE WANTED THE CTR GEAR UP SWITCH IN THE UP POS. A THIRD MECH IN COCKPIT WOULD HAVE BEEN USEFUL. ACFT WAS LOADED WITH PAX AND 1 FAA PLT CHK INSPECTOR IN COCKPIT.
