Narrative:
While giving a lesson in a PA38-112. Having a request for touch and goes denied. I gave the tower our intentions to proceed to the east, northeast, of the airport to the practice area. We were instructed to depart runway 15. Part of the tower instructions may have been cut out, or attenuated because we made the normal appropriate turnout to the left. The tower operator became exceedingly angry. Shouting on the frequency, 'you were instructed to turn right.' a right turn would put us in conflict with the only traffic there was, a national guard helicopter, operating to the northwest quadrant of the field. The tower went on to say that what we had done was in direct violation of FARS. We advised them that we did not hear those specific instructions and that his xmissions had been dropped and the last one was stepped on. However, if he did say right turn-out, we were fooled. We thought we had the correct information when we took off.

Title: DEV FROM CLRNC RTE -- INSTRUCTOR PLT TURNS L OUT OF THE PATTERN INSTEAD OF R AS INSTRUCTED.
Narrative: WHILE GIVING A LESSON IN A PA38-112. HAVING A REQUEST FOR TOUCH AND GOES DENIED. I GAVE THE TWR OUR INTENTIONS TO PROCEED TO THE E, NE, OF THE ARPT TO THE PRACTICE AREA. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO DEPART RWY 15. PART OF THE TWR INSTRUCTIONS MAY HAVE BEEN CUT OUT, OR ATTENUATED BECAUSE WE MADE THE NORMAL APPROPRIATE TURNOUT TO THE L. THE TWR OPERATOR BECAME EXCEEDINGLY ANGRY. SHOUTING ON THE FREQ, 'YOU WERE INSTRUCTED TO TURN R.' A R TURN WOULD PUT US IN CONFLICT WITH THE ONLY TFC THERE WAS, A NATIONAL GUARD HELI, OPERATING TO THE NW QUADRANT OF THE FIELD. THE TWR WENT ON TO SAY THAT WHAT WE HAD DONE WAS IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF FARS. WE ADVISED THEM THAT WE DID NOT HEAR THOSE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS AND THAT HIS XMISSIONS HAD BEEN DROPPED AND THE LAST ONE WAS STEPPED ON. HOWEVER, IF HE DID SAY R TURN-OUT, WE WERE FOOLED. WE THOUGHT WE HAD THE CORRECT INFO WHEN WE TOOK OFF.
