Narrative:
Assigned FL270. Climbing through FL265 selected FMS override to .80 mach. Autoplt was engaged. Altitude alert prior to level off sounded and 1000 ft to go callouts were made. Aircraft did not capture altitude. Autoplt was disengaged and aircraft was hand flown back to FL270. Highest altitude was FL274. Autoplt was re-engaged with no further incident. Supplemental information from acn 314234: climbing through FL265 the first officer announced he was going to accelerate to mach .80 (we had a line of WX ahead of us and center had said to expect higher north of crg VOR). He hoped to zoom over the WX when cleared by center. The aircraft did not capture the altitude. The autoplt/FMS must have been confused with the change of speed modes in the climb.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR FLC OVERSHOT CLRNC ALT DURING CLB WHILE AUTOPLT AND FMS WERE ENGAGED.
Narrative: ASSIGNED FL270. CLBING THROUGH FL265 SELECTED FMS OVERRIDE TO .80 MACH. AUTOPLT WAS ENGAGED. ALT ALERT PRIOR TO LEVEL OFF SOUNDED AND 1000 FT TO GO CALLOUTS WERE MADE. ACFT DID NOT CAPTURE ALT. AUTOPLT WAS DISENGAGED AND ACFT WAS HAND FLOWN BACK TO FL270. HIGHEST ALT WAS FL274. AUTOPLT WAS RE-ENGAGED WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 314234: CLBING THROUGH FL265 THE FO ANNOUNCED HE WAS GOING TO ACCELERATE TO MACH .80 (WE HAD A LINE OF WX AHEAD OF US AND CTR HAD SAID TO EXPECT HIGHER N OF CRG VOR). HE HOPED TO ZOOM OVER THE WX WHEN CLRED BY CTR. THE ACFT DID NOT CAPTURE THE ALT. THE AUTOPLT/FMS MUST HAVE BEEN CONFUSED WITH THE CHANGE OF SPD MODES IN THE CLB.
