Air Traffic Incident | other |
Narrative:
I rejected the takeoff at approximately 70 KIAS. I saw traffic (unidented) crossing my centerline near the end of the runway. I rejected the takeoff to determine what the traffic was and pinpoint its actual position. It turned out to be a ground service vehicle on another runway that did not intersect my runway. This was hard to see due to the confusion of lights near the end of the runway. I thought better safe than sorry, let's stop and see what's really going on. After clearing the runway and confirming the situation with tower we taxied back, ran the before takeoff checklist, checked our braking action checklist, and performed a normal takeoff. Supplemental information from acn 315373: aircraft was cleared for takeoff runway 4L. Traffic was not on runway 4L but was actually on runway 11/29. Captain said later that the situation presented an optical illusion. This could have been avoided possibly, if tower notified aircraft there was vehicle traffic crossing on runway 11/29.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC8 TKOF ABORTED. VEHICLE ON ANOTHER RWY GAVE THE ILLUSION THAT IT WAS ON THE FLC'S DEP RWY.
Narrative: I REJECTED THE TKOF AT APPROX 70 KIAS. I SAW TFC (UNIDENTED) XING MY CTRLINE NEAR THE END OF THE RWY. I REJECTED THE TKOF TO DETERMINE WHAT THE TFC WAS AND PINPOINT ITS ACTUAL POS. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A GND SVC VEHICLE ON ANOTHER RWY THAT DID NOT INTERSECT MY RWY. THIS WAS HARD TO SEE DUE TO THE CONFUSION OF LIGHTS NEAR THE END OF THE RWY. I THOUGHT BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY, LET'S STOP AND SEE WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON. AFTER CLRING THE RWY AND CONFIRMING THE SIT WITH TWR WE TAXIED BACK, RAN THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST, CHKED OUR BRAKING ACTION CHKLIST, AND PERFORMED A NORMAL TKOF. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 315373: ACFT WAS CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 4L. TFC WAS NOT ON RWY 4L BUT WAS ACTUALLY ON RWY 11/29. CAPT SAID LATER THAT THE SIT PRESENTED AN OPTICAL ILLUSION. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED POSSIBLY, IF TWR NOTIFIED ACFT THERE WAS VEHICLE TFC XING ON RWY 11/29.
