Narrative:
I was trying to depart lbb with low ceilings 1200 ft, clearance informed me IMC conditions existed. 2 other VFR rated pilots told me to ask for special clearance and I could get clearance to depart. I observed the 2 planes depart and decided to do the same. I was cleared not knowing or asking what limitations were associated with the special clearance. After liftoff I ascended into the thin (approximately 100 ft) cloud layer. Tower informed me they had lost sight of me and I should call the local (lubbock) FAA office. I had a clear cloud free flight home to abq. The mistake I made would have been avoided if I would have asked clearance or departure what restrs were placed on the special clearance. As a result of my actions I am starting my instrument training on sep/xx/95.
