Narrative:
I signed my student off for his first solo cross country. He had been trying to do this cross country for over a month. The student was probably nervous about his first solo cross country. The student went to depart after getting a late start. I did not witness the incident but went to aircraft 5 mins after it occurred. Apparently, and as told by student, he added full power for takeoff. At about 50 KTS, the aircraft began to pull to the left due to the brake binding. He attempted to counteract with right rudder and brake. The aircraft went off to the left of the runway, rolled across a runway and taxiway sign. This probably snapped the nose gear back and off. The aircraft dug into ground nose first stopping abruptly. The student had prior retarded the throttle to abort the takeoff, however the momentum was too great. The student was uninjured.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BINDING BRAKE LED TO A DEP FROM THE RWY AND NOSE GEAR DAMAGE.
Narrative: I SIGNED MY STUDENT OFF FOR HIS FIRST SOLO XCOUNTRY. HE HAD BEEN TRYING TO DO THIS XCOUNTRY FOR OVER A MONTH. THE STUDENT WAS PROBABLY NERVOUS ABOUT HIS FIRST SOLO XCOUNTRY. THE STUDENT WENT TO DEPART AFTER GETTING A LATE START. I DID NOT WITNESS THE INCIDENT BUT WENT TO ACFT 5 MINS AFTER IT OCCURRED. APPARENTLY, AND AS TOLD BY STUDENT, HE ADDED FULL PWR FOR TKOF. AT ABOUT 50 KTS, THE ACFT BEGAN TO PULL TO THE L DUE TO THE BRAKE BINDING. HE ATTEMPTED TO COUNTERACT WITH R RUDDER AND BRAKE. THE ACFT WENT OFF TO THE L OF THE RWY, ROLLED ACROSS A RWY AND TXWY SIGN. THIS PROBABLY SNAPPED THE NOSE GEAR BACK AND OFF. THE ACFT DUG INTO GND NOSE FIRST STOPPING ABRUPTLY. THE STUDENT HAD PRIOR RETARDED THE THROTTLE TO ABORT THE TKOF, HOWEVER THE MOMENTUM WAS TOO GREAT. THE STUDENT WAS UNINJURED.
