Narrative:
Air carrier XXXX at cruise, FL330, experiencing light chop, requested lower altitude from center. Prior to request, other aircraft, abxx, had requested lower altitude, to FL270 (I believe). Center advised air carrier XXXX, 'if you can go down immediately, lower altitude is available.' 'roger, XXXX, we can expedite now.' center, 'XXXX cleared to FL270.' air carrier XXXX started down and was advised by center, 'what were we doing at approximately FL324?' we immediately stopped descent and advised center we were climbing back to FL330. (We did receive TCASII alert, 'traffic.') at FL330 we advised center we were level and that we had acknowledged descent clearance and departure from FL330 to FL270. It appeared center had our call sign 'XXXX' confused with 'abxx.' no further incident. Problem arose due to like sounding call sings. Communications with abxx were sometimes vague. Trying to expedite descent too rapidly by center.

Title: RADAR CTLR HAS SIMILAR A/N ACFT ON FREQ. GIVES DSCNT CLRNC TO WRONG ACFT.
Narrative: ACR XXXX AT CRUISE, FL330, EXPERIENCING LIGHT CHOP, REQUESTED LOWER ALT FROM CTR. PRIOR TO REQUEST, OTHER ACFT, ABXX, HAD REQUESTED LOWER ALT, TO FL270 (I BELIEVE). CTR ADVISED ACR XXXX, 'IF YOU CAN GO DOWN IMMEDIATELY, LOWER ALT IS AVAILABLE.' 'ROGER, XXXX, WE CAN EXPEDITE NOW.' CTR, 'XXXX CLRED TO FL270.' ACR XXXX STARTED DOWN AND WAS ADVISED BY CTR, 'WHAT WERE WE DOING AT APPROX FL324?' WE IMMEDIATELY STOPPED DSCNT AND ADVISED CTR WE WERE CLBING BACK TO FL330. (WE DID RECEIVE TCASII ALERT, 'TFC.') AT FL330 WE ADVISED CTR WE WERE LEVEL AND THAT WE HAD ACKNOWLEDGED DSCNT CLRNC AND DEP FROM FL330 TO FL270. IT APPEARED CTR HAD OUR CALL SIGN 'XXXX' CONFUSED WITH 'ABXX.' NO FURTHER INCIDENT. PROB AROSE DUE TO LIKE SOUNDING CALL SINGS. COMS WITH ABXX WERE SOMETIMES VAGUE. TRYING TO EXPEDITE DSCNT TOO RAPIDLY BY CTR.
