Narrative:

On takeoff roll (runway 28, bwi) captain called 100 KTS and I briefly looked down to verify and said 'checked.' as I looked forward again, I saw approximately 30-40 pigeons or mourning doves on the right side of the runway. I called out 'birds' and looked back at the airspeed and noticed we were very close to V1/vr. Just then the captain said 'V1-rotate' and I felt thud followed shortly by the smell of dead bird meat cooking. I rotated a little slower and continued the takeoff once a positive rate was established. I called for 'gear up.' at about 1500-1800 ft MSL captain turned off right pack to keep the smell from permeating more. Flaps were retracted on schedule and a level off altitude of 3000 ft MSL and a speed range of 210-220 KTS was maintained. Captain had advised the tower we needed to return but they misunderstood and passed us off to departure control. The captain told departure control of our intention to return to bwi because of a bird strike. Departure control cleared us for a visual approach to runway 33L, bwi. We set radios and configured aircraft for approach. Tower cleared us for the visual and cleared us to land. I made the captain aware we were making an overweight landing and he noted the weight and we selected autobrake level 2 for landing. All engine parameters seemed normal except for the smell and a small vibration sound coming from right engine. Touchdown and rollout were normal. Ground inspection found several fan blades damaged and aircraft was grounded. We never felt rushed/panicked or in a 'declared emergency' position. Maintenance logbook entry on oct/xx/95 revealed they replaced all fan blades on right engine and 4 on the left engine.

Title: RPTR'S ACFT ENGS INGESTED BIRDS ON TKOF.

Narrative: ON TKOF ROLL (RWY 28, BWI) CAPT CALLED 100 KTS AND I BRIEFLY LOOKED DOWN TO VERIFY AND SAID 'CHKED.' AS I LOOKED FORWARD AGAIN, I SAW APPROX 30-40 PIGEONS OR MOURNING DOVES ON THE R SIDE OF THE RWY. I CALLED OUT 'BIRDS' AND LOOKED BACK AT THE AIRSPD AND NOTICED WE WERE VERY CLOSE TO V1/VR. JUST THEN THE CAPT SAID 'V1-ROTATE' AND I FELT THUD FOLLOWED SHORTLY BY THE SMELL OF DEAD BIRD MEAT COOKING. I ROTATED A LITTLE SLOWER AND CONTINUED THE TKOF ONCE A POSITIVE RATE WAS ESTABLISHED. I CALLED FOR 'GEAR UP.' AT ABOUT 1500-1800 FT MSL CAPT TURNED OFF R PACK TO KEEP THE SMELL FROM PERMEATING MORE. FLAPS WERE RETRACTED ON SCHEDULE AND A LEVEL OFF ALT OF 3000 FT MSL AND A SPD RANGE OF 210-220 KTS WAS MAINTAINED. CAPT HAD ADVISED THE TWR WE NEEDED TO RETURN BUT THEY MISUNDERSTOOD AND PASSED US OFF TO DEP CTL. THE CAPT TOLD DEP CTL OF OUR INTENTION TO RETURN TO BWI BECAUSE OF A BIRD STRIKE. DEP CTL CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 33L, BWI. WE SET RADIOS AND CONFIGURED ACFT FOR APCH. TWR CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL AND CLRED US TO LAND. I MADE THE CAPT AWARE WE WERE MAKING AN OVERWT LNDG AND HE NOTED THE WT AND WE SELECTED AUTOBRAKE LEVEL 2 FOR LNDG. ALL ENG PARAMETERS SEEMED NORMAL EXCEPT FOR THE SMELL AND A SMALL VIBRATION SOUND COMING FROM R ENG. TOUCHDOWN AND ROLLOUT WERE NORMAL. GND INSPECTION FOUND SEVERAL FAN BLADES DAMAGED AND ACFT WAS GNDED. WE NEVER FELT RUSHED/PANICKED OR IN A 'DECLARED EMER' POS. MAINT LOGBOOK ENTRY ON OCT/XX/95 REVEALED THEY REPLACED ALL FAN BLADES ON R ENG AND 4 ON THE L ENG.
