Narrative:
I was given an amended clearance en route, to RNAV direct to an intersection. I was having problems with the RNAV and asked the controller for a heading. I set the autoplt up on the heading and engaged it. Immediately the plane rolled into a 60 degree bank to the right and pitched down. Before I could shut off the autoplt I had turned 60 degrees. Attempting to get back on course I was inquired about my heading. Then was given a new heading for traffic and told I was north of my expected course. Once back direct to the intersection I was switched to detroit approach. I should have let ATC know about the autoplt problem and asked for a new heading on course. The RNAV problem and autoplt problem was combined with the night IFR, moderate turbulence, and moderate rime ice. The high pilot workload may have accentuated the situation.

Title: AUTOPLT PERFORMS UNCOMMANDED 60 DEG BANK AND PITCH DOWN CAUSING RPTR TO DEVIATE FROM COURSE AND ALT.
Narrative: I WAS GIVEN AN AMENDED CLRNC ENRTE, TO RNAV DIRECT TO AN INTXN. I WAS HAVING PROBS WITH THE RNAV AND ASKED THE CTLR FOR A HDG. I SET THE AUTOPLT UP ON THE HDG AND ENGAGED IT. IMMEDIATELY THE PLANE ROLLED INTO A 60 DEG BANK TO THE R AND PITCHED DOWN. BEFORE I COULD SHUT OFF THE AUTOPLT I HAD TURNED 60 DEGS. ATTEMPTING TO GET BACK ON COURSE I WAS INQUIRED ABOUT MY HDG. THEN WAS GIVEN A NEW HDG FOR TFC AND TOLD I WAS N OF MY EXPECTED COURSE. ONCE BACK DIRECT TO THE INTXN I WAS SWITCHED TO DETROIT APCH. I SHOULD HAVE LET ATC KNOW ABOUT THE AUTOPLT PROB AND ASKED FOR A NEW HDG ON COURSE. THE RNAV PROB AND AUTOPLT PROB WAS COMBINED WITH THE NIGHT IFR, MODERATE TURB, AND MODERATE RIME ICE. THE HIGH PLT WORKLOAD MAY HAVE ACCENTUATED THE SIT.
