Narrative:
ZJX called us south of chs and asked us about our route of flight. We were going direct to omn. We should have been going on J79. The copilot and I both checked the route in the FMC at lga and agree it was correct. Our best guess as to what happened was that I somehow was making scratch pad entries with the side of my shoe when it was against my right foot rest. I would suggest a shield or block be built for the edge of the foot rest or FMC, but I know that will never happen.
