Narrative:
Logbook maintenance write-up was for the 'reverser valve open' light (#3) staying on after termination of reverse on landing. Maintenance action was to defer the light, and stated that reverser operation was useable. The #3 reverse lever was wired off, contrary to the maintenance entry. In order to bring the aircraft in conformance with the log entry, after discussing the matter with chicago maintenance, the wire was cut and discarded. After landing at denver, the captain attempted to put all 3 engines into reverse, but got no response from #3. It was later discovered that the #3 reverser control circuit breaker had been pulled and capped. Supplemental information from acn 319536: there appeared to have been some miscom as to the status of the #3 reverser. A little more investigation prior to departure would have incurred a delay, but was probably warranted. We should have let maintenance cut the wire for the reverser.
