Narrative:
Understood clearance from clt approach to maintain visual separation from another aircraft on approach and follow with clearance to follow for visual approach to runway 36R. Started turn to west to follow traffic that was pointed out. Read back cleared to follow traffic (in sight). Part way into turn approximately 30 degrees (210 degree heading) controller called said we didn't have clearance to follow and turn back to 180 degrees and continue descent to 2300 ft. Saw more traffic on final (that we were supposed to follow, dash 8). He was further out and not at position initially called. Other aircraft was in that position. No close encounters!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RPTR UNDERSTOOD CTLR TO SAY MAINTAIN VISUAL FROM AN ACFT ON FINAL APCH. THEN RPTR HEARD CLRED FOR THE VISUAL FOLLOW THAT ACFT. AS THE RPTR STARTED FOLLOWING THAT ACFT THE CTLR SAID HE WAS NOT CLRED TO FOLLOW THAT ACFT AND WAS VECTORED TO FOLLOW ANOTHER ACFT FARTHER OUT ON THE APCH.
Narrative: UNDERSTOOD CLRNC FROM CLT APCH TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION FROM ANOTHER ACFT ON APCH AND FOLLOW WITH CLRNC TO FOLLOW FOR VISUAL APCH TO RWY 36R. STARTED TURN TO W TO FOLLOW TFC THAT WAS POINTED OUT. READ BACK CLRED TO FOLLOW TFC (IN SIGHT). PART WAY INTO TURN APPROX 30 DEGS (210 DEG HDG) CTLR CALLED SAID WE DIDN'T HAVE CLRNC TO FOLLOW AND TURN BACK TO 180 DEGS AND CONTINUE DSCNT TO 2300 FT. SAW MORE TFC ON FINAL (THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO FOLLOW, DASH 8). HE WAS FURTHER OUT AND NOT AT POS INITIALLY CALLED. OTHER ACFT WAS IN THAT POS. NO CLOSE ENCOUNTERS!
