Narrative:
During a night flight over water, passenger and then pilot smelled smoke. Because of night could not see smoke. Asked bos approach control for vector to nearest airport for a precautionary landing. Landed without incident at NAS weymouth. Examination found no evidence of fire or malfunction. This was first time aircraft heater was used and mechanic believes this was the source of the smell.
