Narrative:

On the second day of a 3 day trip, flew from lax to iah and parked at gate for a 1 hour layover before continuing to mia in the same aircraft with the same crew. Ran the parking checklist per normal procedures and got off the airplane to go eat. Upon return 30 mins later was informed by crew member that maintenance personnel had boarded the aircraft to shut down #1 engine, which I had left running. Although there had been some minor distractions during the last seconds of gate arrival, nothing out of the ordinary happened that I can recall. Both myself and the first officer did what we normally do and saw what we normally saw (or thought we saw -- expected to see?) during the parking checklist. After yrs of repetition of the same habits, I'm still at a loss as to how I managed to leave an engine running, but I do know that you can look right at something that always looks the same, and the one time it isn't, you can still swear that what you saw was the same as always. Time to slow down and pay attention to checklist discipline.
