Narrative:
We departed dwh in the houston area at approximately XX45 local in citation xyz. After making a right turn out, we were verified in radar contact by houston approach and were given a northerly heading. We were cleared to 5000 ft and were climbing through 4000 ft when I asked the first officer to request further climb. We received what we believed was a clearance to climb to 15000 ft from houston approach central and read back the full clearance 'citation xyz is cleared to 15000 ft,' and did not receive a negative from houston approach. As we reached 8000 ft we were advised that our clearance was to 5000 ft. We adjusted our climb attitude and leveled off and advised approach that we were descending to 5000 ft. At that time, approach said there was no conflict and to climb to 15000 ft. At some point in time, we recognized that there was an aircraft on frequency with a similar call sign. Perhaps the clearance had been given to that aircraft instead of us. Corrective: when in doubt about a clearance, ask for a repeat of the clearance to insure correctness.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A CORP LTT JET OVERSHOT INITIAL CLB ALT DUE TO RESPONDING TO ANOTHER CALL SIGN CLRNC.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED DWH IN THE HOUSTON AREA AT APPROX XX45 LCL IN CITATION XYZ. AFTER MAKING A R TURN OUT, WE WERE VERIFIED IN RADAR CONTACT BY HOUSTON APCH AND WERE GIVEN A NORTHERLY HDG. WE WERE CLRED TO 5000 FT AND WERE CLBING THROUGH 4000 FT WHEN I ASKED THE FO TO REQUEST FURTHER CLB. WE RECEIVED WHAT WE BELIEVED WAS A CLRNC TO CLB TO 15000 FT FROM HOUSTON APCH CENTRAL AND READ BACK THE FULL CLRNC 'CITATION XYZ IS CLRED TO 15000 FT,' AND DID NOT RECEIVE A NEGATIVE FROM HOUSTON APCH. AS WE REACHED 8000 FT WE WERE ADVISED THAT OUR CLRNC WAS TO 5000 FT. WE ADJUSTED OUR CLB ATTITUDE AND LEVELED OFF AND ADVISED APCH THAT WE WERE DSNDING TO 5000 FT. AT THAT TIME, APCH SAID THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AND TO CLB TO 15000 FT. AT SOME POINT IN TIME, WE RECOGNIZED THAT THERE WAS AN ACFT ON FREQ WITH A SIMILAR CALL SIGN. PERHAPS THE CLRNC HAD BEEN GIVEN TO THAT ACFT INSTEAD OF US. CORRECTIVE: WHEN IN DOUBT ABOUT A CLRNC, ASK FOR A REPEAT OF THE CLRNC TO INSURE CORRECTNESS.
