Narrative:

On approach to runway 28L at boi, we were cleared to 6000 ft and asked to report airport in sight. I had a new first officer with some problems flying the aircraft. ATC gave us a heading of 310 degrees to intercept the localizer. My workload was extremely heavy due to the first officer's weakness, checklist, set up for approach, etc. The approach plate calls for an altitude of 5000 ft inside 9 DME. The so in an attempt to be helpful said we're good to 5000 ft after we hit 9 DME. The first officer started down and I absently minded reset the altitude alert to 5000 ft. Passing approximately 4500 ft I realized the mistake, told ATC we had the runway and were cleared for the visual. Factors: fatigue, this was the end of a week of backside of the clock flying. Stress, a new and weak first officer released from training to the line too early.

Title: FLC DEPARTS ASSIGNED ALT PRIOR TO RECEIVING CLRNC FOR A VISUAL APCH.

Narrative: ON APCH TO RWY 28L AT BOI, WE WERE CLRED TO 6000 FT AND ASKED TO RPT ARPT IN SIGHT. I HAD A NEW FO WITH SOME PROBS FLYING THE ACFT. ATC GAVE US A HDG OF 310 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE LOC. MY WORKLOAD WAS EXTREMELY HVY DUE TO THE FO'S WEAKNESS, CHKLIST, SET UP FOR APCH, ETC. THE APCH PLATE CALLS FOR AN ALT OF 5000 FT INSIDE 9 DME. THE SO IN AN ATTEMPT TO BE HELPFUL SAID WE'RE GOOD TO 5000 FT AFTER WE HIT 9 DME. THE FO STARTED DOWN AND I ABSENTLY MINDED RESET THE ALT ALERT TO 5000 FT. PASSING APPROX 4500 FT I REALIZED THE MISTAKE, TOLD ATC WE HAD THE RWY AND WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL. FACTORS: FATIGUE, THIS WAS THE END OF A WK OF BACKSIDE OF THE CLOCK FLYING. STRESS, A NEW AND WEAK FO RELEASED FROM TRAINING TO THE LINE TOO EARLY.
