Narrative:
The taxi hold point for runway 28 and runway 23 are not depicted on the taxi chart correctly. The chart shows an area beyond runway 23 before going onto runway 28. In reality there is no space so we taxied past the hold line but stopped short of the runway. The chart needs to be updated immediately. The fact that it was night was a huge contributing factor. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states the airport diagram chart has been changed since his report. It is better but still does not depict the correct information. Reporter claims that once you have taxied onto runway 23 you are also on runway 28L. The diagram indicates a separation which reporter says does not exist. He indicated there are signs but the lights were out and this was a night flight. Reporter does not excuse himself for missing the taxiway end, but was confused by the diagram. Feels something must be done as he is sure this has happened to others and in fact has spoken to some pilots who admit they have done the same thing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9 PLT TAXIES ONTO RWY DUE TO CONFUSION REGARDING THE ARPT DIAGRAM AND DIFFERENCE FROM WHAT REALLY EXISTS.
Narrative: THE TAXI HOLD POINT FOR RWY 28 AND RWY 23 ARE NOT DEPICTED ON THE TAXI CHART CORRECTLY. THE CHART SHOWS AN AREA BEYOND RWY 23 BEFORE GOING ONTO RWY 28. IN REALITY THERE IS NO SPACE SO WE TAXIED PAST THE HOLD LINE BUT STOPPED SHORT OF THE RWY. THE CHART NEEDS TO BE UPDATED IMMEDIATELY. THE FACT THAT IT WAS NIGHT WAS A HUGE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THE ARPT DIAGRAM CHART HAS BEEN CHANGED SINCE HIS RPT. IT IS BETTER BUT STILL DOES NOT DEPICT THE CORRECT INFO. RPTR CLAIMS THAT ONCE YOU HAVE TAXIED ONTO RWY 23 YOU ARE ALSO ON RWY 28L. THE DIAGRAM INDICATES A SEPARATION WHICH RPTR SAYS DOES NOT EXIST. HE INDICATED THERE ARE SIGNS BUT THE LIGHTS WERE OUT AND THIS WAS A NIGHT FLT. RPTR DOES NOT EXCUSE HIMSELF FOR MISSING THE TXWY END, BUT WAS CONFUSED BY THE DIAGRAM. FEELS SOMETHING MUST BE DONE AS HE IS SURE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHERS AND IN FACT HAS SPOKEN TO SOME PLTS WHO ADMIT THEY HAVE DONE THE SAME THING.
