Narrative:
In sum: the reporter was a flight instructor without a medical certificate. He was ferrying an airplane to another airport. To be legal he was giving flight instruction to the private pilot who had a medical and needed to build time in a complex aircraft. The airplane experienced a vibration en route and in the traffic pattern. The private pilot misjudged the approach and was too high on final for landing. When the flight instructor told the pilot to go around, the airplane would not develop power with application of the throttle sufficient to sustain flight. The reporter attempted to land in the remaining runway and ran off the end collapsing the nosewheel. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter's wife stated that the reporter died in january of chronic heart failure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE RPTR, DUE TO A PWR LOSS, HAD TO ABANDON HIS MISSED APCH AND LAND ON THE INADEQUATE REMAINING RWY. THE AIRPLANE RAN OFF THE END AND THE NOSEWHEEL COLLAPSED.
Narrative: IN SUM: THE RPTR WAS A FLT INSTRUCTOR WITHOUT A MEDICAL CERTIFICATE. HE WAS FERRYING AN AIRPLANE TO ANOTHER ARPT. TO BE LEGAL HE WAS GIVING FLT INSTRUCTION TO THE PVT PLT WHO HAD A MEDICAL AND NEEDED TO BUILD TIME IN A COMPLEX ACFT. THE AIRPLANE EXPERIENCED A VIBRATION ENRTE AND IN THE TFC PATTERN. THE PVT PLT MISJUDGED THE APCH AND WAS TOO HIGH ON FINAL FOR LNDG. WHEN THE FLT INSTRUCTOR TOLD THE PLT TO GAR, THE AIRPLANE WOULD NOT DEVELOP PWR WITH APPLICATION OF THE THROTTLE SUFFICIENT TO SUSTAIN FLT. THE RPTR ATTEMPTED TO LAND IN THE REMAINING RWY AND RAN OFF THE END COLLAPSING THE NOSEWHEEL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR'S WIFE STATED THAT THE RPTR DIED IN JANUARY OF CHRONIC HEART FAILURE.
