Narrative:
ATC control indianapolis. Approaching rosewood feeder fix flight was given instructions to hold north rosewood VOR, 20 mi legs, FL250. I interpreted this to mean, hold north to rosewood VOR, so I turned south to establish my perceived correct analysis of what was expected of me. Controller noticed error and informed us of our acknowledgement of previous instructions and vectored us with no further problems. 1) I misinterpreted instructions, now realizing I mistakenly used NDB procedures. 2) my first officer correctly analyzed situation but was reluctant to correct me since she was new. 3) controller was extremely busy because WX was closing area airports. Frequency was saturated with communications. 4) corrective actions: informed my first officer to speak up -- a little doubt would have made me query ATC about holding. In retrospect I should have asked for a holding radial. Fatigue was a factor, causing my erroneous use of NDB procedures.
