Narrative:
We landed at newport news, va, airport on runway 20 with a normal landing. Phf tower instructed us to exit at taxiway D and to pull onto the blacktop (ramp area) to allow a DC9 to get by us so he could continue his taxi to his takeoff runway. We did this. While stopped on the blacktop, the DC9 proceeded to taxi onto taxiway D (by way of a right hand turn). After he completed his turn and clear of taxiway a we then proceeded into the air carrier ramp, with the concurrence of ground control. After the passenger were deplaned I was told that the DC9 had flipped over a cessna. The cessna was parked on the GA ramp and reportedly another airplane parked beside the flipped over cessna was turned 90 degrees from its original position by the jet blast. These airplanes apparently were not tied down. This airport is widely used by many corporate jets, as well as military jets and airline jets as well. I would like to suggest that small aircraft, at least, be tied down while parked on the GA ranks adjacent to active txwys.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RPTR TAXIES TO ALLOW A DC9 TO GO PAST AS PER TWR INSTRUCTIONS ONLY TO HAVE THE DC9 BLOW A CESSNA OVER.
Narrative: WE LANDED AT NEWPORT NEWS, VA, ARPT ON RWY 20 WITH A NORMAL LNDG. PHF TWR INSTRUCTED US TO EXIT AT TXWY D AND TO PULL ONTO THE BLACKTOP (RAMP AREA) TO ALLOW A DC9 TO GET BY US SO HE COULD CONTINUE HIS TAXI TO HIS TKOF RWY. WE DID THIS. WHILE STOPPED ON THE BLACKTOP, THE DC9 PROCEEDED TO TAXI ONTO TXWY D (BY WAY OF A R HAND TURN). AFTER HE COMPLETED HIS TURN AND CLR OF TXWY A WE THEN PROCEEDED INTO THE ACR RAMP, WITH THE CONCURRENCE OF GND CTL. AFTER THE PAX WERE DEPLANED I WAS TOLD THAT THE DC9 HAD FLIPPED OVER A CESSNA. THE CESSNA WAS PARKED ON THE GA RAMP AND REPORTEDLY ANOTHER AIRPLANE PARKED BESIDE THE FLIPPED OVER CESSNA WAS TURNED 90 DEGS FROM ITS ORIGINAL POS BY THE JET BLAST. THESE AIRPLANES APPARENTLY WERE NOT TIED DOWN. THIS ARPT IS WIDELY USED BY MANY CORPORATE JETS, AS WELL AS MIL JETS AND AIRLINE JETS AS WELL. I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST THAT SMALL ACFT, AT LEAST, BE TIED DOWN WHILE PARKED ON THE GA RANKS ADJACENT TO ACTIVE TXWYS.
