Narrative:
While inbound to sjc on hyp.HYP3 arrival, ATC cleared us to cross papee intersection at or below 13000 ft (normally 16000 ft). We were then cleared to 11000 ft. As we were descending through 12600 ft, we were told to stop our descent at 13000 ft due to the F18 traffic, 3 O'clock, 2 mi, and sbound at 12000 ft! We weren't able to arrest the descent and start our climb until 12500 ft. The PNF informed ATC that we were already descending through 12600 ft, but that we would climb back up to 13000 ft. This exchange occurred again, as we bottomed out at 12500 ft and began our climb. We notified ATC when level at 13000 ft, at which time he cleared us back down to 11000 ft and thanked us for our help.
