Narrative:
As we extered left downwind for runway 4, encountered high-wing aircraft apparently flying upwind (or maybe downwind for runway 22) at approximately 950 ft (pattern altitude is 810 ft). We made request on unicom for airport advisory 10 mi north, announced intention to enter left downwind runway 4 at 5 mi north after TA and aircraft viewed in pattern for runway 4. Took some evasive action early -- we had plane in sight all the way. Caused us to take a wide downwind, after which intruder took close downwind. CFI re-announced our intention, other plane fell in behind us and announced second for runway 4.
