A corp flight crew began taxiing without the use of the airport diagram and followed the incorrect taxi route. The new taxi route meant that they had to taxi on runway 31 in order to hold short of runway 30R. When the mistake was discovered, they contacted the ground controller for new instructions.

Narrative:
I was told to use taxiway 'north' to cross runway 31 and hold short of runway 30R. Instead, I taxied out onto another taxiway instead of taxiway 'north' and held short of runway 30R on taxiway 'right.' I was familiar with the field and instead of referencing the taxi chart, I taxied out thinking the correct route was the one I chose. In the future I plan on using the taxi chart to verify routing instead of relying on what I remember. Even fields I am familiar with such as stl. Supplemental information from acn 332700: we mistakenly used taxiway west which left us no choice but to use runway 31 to get to runway 30R. As soon as we realized we were on the wrong taxi route we called ground control to inform them of our mistake and get new instructions. New instructions were issued and we proceeded onto runway 30L without further incident.

Narrative: I WAS TOLD TO USE TXWY 'N' TO CROSS RWY 31 AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30R. INSTEAD, I TAXIED OUT ONTO ANOTHER TXWY INSTEAD OF TXWY 'N' AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 30R ON TXWY 'R.' I WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE FIELD AND INSTEAD OF REFING THE TAXI CHART, I TAXIED OUT THINKING THE CORRECT RTE WAS THE ONE I CHOSE. IN THE FUTURE I PLAN ON USING THE TAXI CHART TO VERIFY ROUTING INSTEAD OF RELYING ON WHAT I REMEMBER. EVEN FIELDS I AM FAMILIAR WITH SUCH AS STL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 332700: WE MISTAKENLY USED TXWY W WHICH LEFT US NO CHOICE BUT TO USE RWY 31 TO GET TO RWY 30R. AS SOON AS WE REALIZED WE WERE ON THE WRONG TAXI RTE WE CALLED GND CTL TO INFORM THEM OF OUR MISTAKE AND GET NEW INSTRUCTIONS.
