Narrative:

The flight profile was a maintenance test flight and chkout for a new company pilot. I was in right seat explaining test procedures. While VFR level at 17500 ft MSL, the altitude hold function of the autoplt inadvertently disconnected. The plane climbed through FL180. Center advised me of local altimeter setting. I noticed deviation at FL186 and corrected back to 17500 ft. Lesson learned: you must continue to monitor airspeed, altitude and attitude regardless of what your autoplt switch position indicates.
