Narrative:
On the ziggy arrival from las to ont in the general vicinity of garey intersection and in a descent from 12000 ft, socal approach cleared us for a visual approach to runway 8R at ont. We were told to turn base at 3000 ft or above. I was the PF. The captain queried if we were following traffic and we were informed we were 15 mi behind air carrier Y, to continue and that we wouldn't catch him. We slowed on downwind and configured abeam the airport for a high left base to runway 8R. As we turned base the socal controller also was busy with traffic to other airports, didn't hand us over to tower so we changed to tower at about 3000 ft MSL. Ont tower gave us an immediate right turn to 270 degrees and a climb to 4000 ft. As we started our turn we saw air carrier Y outside us on final. We made our turn, climbed to 4000 ft, and after passing air carrier Y, we were given a 180 degree turn back to the airport for a visual and uneventful landing on runway 8R. After being given our initial clearance for the visual approach we were never again notified of the position of the aircraft.

Title: WHILE ON A VISUAL APCH BASE LEG, ATC TWR INTERVENED AND INSTRUCTED THE FLC TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE TURN FOR TFC SEPARATION WITH ANOTHER ACFT MAKING AN APCH TO A PARALLEL RWY.
Narrative: ON THE ZIGGY ARR FROM LAS TO ONT IN THE GENERAL VICINITY OF GAREY INTXN AND IN A DSCNT FROM 12000 FT, SOCAL APCH CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 8R AT ONT. WE WERE TOLD TO TURN BASE AT 3000 FT OR ABOVE. I WAS THE PF. THE CAPT QUERIED IF WE WERE FOLLOWING TFC AND WE WERE INFORMED WE WERE 15 MI BEHIND ACR Y, TO CONTINUE AND THAT WE WOULDN'T CATCH HIM. WE SLOWED ON DOWNWIND AND CONFIGURED ABEAM THE ARPT FOR A HIGH L BASE TO RWY 8R. AS WE TURNED BASE THE SOCAL CTLR ALSO WAS BUSY WITH TFC TO OTHER ARPTS, DIDN'T HAND US OVER TO TWR SO WE CHANGED TO TWR AT ABOUT 3000 FT MSL. ONT TWR GAVE US AN IMMEDIATE R TURN TO 270 DEGS AND A CLB TO 4000 FT. AS WE STARTED OUR TURN WE SAW ACR Y OUTSIDE US ON FINAL. WE MADE OUR TURN, CLBED TO 4000 FT, AND AFTER PASSING ACR Y, WE WERE GIVEN A 180 DEG TURN BACK TO THE ARPT FOR A VISUAL AND UNEVENTFUL LNDG ON RWY 8R. AFTER BEING GIVEN OUR INITIAL CLRNC FOR THE VISUAL APCH WE WERE NEVER AGAIN NOTIFIED OF THE POS OF THE ACFT.
