Narrative:
I had flown to cho from fdk with previous owner of aircraft. Upon leaving cho, I advised clearance that I would like to depart VFR via direct iad direct EMI direct W54. This airplane is a new type to me and I was not comfortable with IFR. Not knowing the navigation system. It is equipped with GPS which I have no experience with, having only 1 VOR receiver without standard DME. I contacted dulles approach at approximately 45 mi southwest. He gave me a squawk code and I continued to iad. When I called again I was given a frequency change. I called and stated I was approximately 25 mi southwest. At this time I was told to remain clear. I turned west to depart the area. I was in an aircraft with unfamiliar navigation system. ATC was advised of my position and intentions at every step of the way. If ATC would like me to remain clear of an area. Maybe they should give me that information a little sooner.
