Narrative:
Departure alerted us to VFR traffic 2 O'clock (approximately) 6 mi (approximately). Never saw aircraft. Departure 'climb to 6500 ft (??)' 'the traffic is climbing too' 'turn hard left.' at this point TCASII commanded 'climb, climb.' we were in a nose up (25 degree) climb to the left when the first officer spotted the aircraft off the right approximately 200 ft. Our airspeed had decreased from 250 KTS to approximately 180 KTS and I extended flaps 11 degrees. We missed aircraft and continued in flight. It seems in hindsight with a VFR above us on a collision course we should have descended to miss, then climb. A MD80 at 140000 pound will not perform too well in climb.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC. DURING DEP CLB, DEP CTLR ALERTED FLC OF INTRUDER VFR ACFT AND PROVIDED VECTOR HDGS. AFTER BEING TURNED 'HARD L' TCASII COMMANDED CLB FOR TFC. IN STEEP CLB FOR AVOIDANCE, AIRSPD DECREASED AND RPTR CAPT EXTENDED FLAPS FOR GREATER STALL MARGIN.
Narrative: DEP ALERTED US TO VFR TFC 2 O'CLOCK (APPROX) 6 MI (APPROX). NEVER SAW ACFT. DEP 'CLB TO 6500 FT (??)' 'THE TFC IS CLBING TOO' 'TURN HARD L.' AT THIS POINT TCASII COMMANDED 'CLB, CLB.' WE WERE IN A NOSE UP (25 DEG) CLB TO THE L WHEN THE FO SPOTTED THE ACFT OFF THE R APPROX 200 FT. OUR AIRSPD HAD DECREASED FROM 250 KTS TO APPROX 180 KTS AND I EXTENDED FLAPS 11 DEGS. WE MISSED ACFT AND CONTINUED IN FLT. IT SEEMS IN HINDSIGHT WITH A VFR ABOVE US ON A COLLISION COURSE WE SHOULD HAVE DSNDED TO MISS, THEN CLB. A MD80 AT 140000 LB WILL NOT PERFORM TOO WELL IN CLB.
