Narrative:

Very short leg from azo to dtw. Near lfd VOR we were given a heading to intercept the 246 degree radial off carlton VOR. Later we were told to turn further right to 120 degrees. When the 246 degree radial came alive, I said so, and the first officer intercepted it. Shortly after, ZOB asked our heading and told us we weren't supposed to intercept. Center then turned us over to dtw approach. In the future I will try to turn my VOR radial off the airway so I won't intercept it while on a heading. The first officer is new and has been on line 2 months. This was his first day back after 2 weeks off. Also his dad had just died.
