Narrative:
During cruise at FL290, got a TCASII TA -- target approximately 5 NM at 12 O'clock. Within seconds received a TCASII RA command 'climb, climb' soon followed by 'increase climb' command. TCASII target displayed 12 O'clock within 1 NM. I followed TCASII climb command and climbed to FL295. Advised ARTCC then descended back to FL290 when clear of 'conflict.' TCASII had been a previous write-up on apr/xx/96 on that aircraft and the TCASII transceiver had been replaced on that day. During our episode, ZDC confirmed there was no conflicting traffic with us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TCASII RA. FLC FOLLOWED CLB COMMAND, BUT ATC AND FLC DETERMINED THE TARGET WAS FALSE. THE ACFT TCASII HAD BEEN WRITTEN UP BEFORE.
