Narrative:
Location: 40 mi south of nepta over the gulf deviating around WX. Autoplt disengaged, aircraft gained 200 ft then lost 500 ft then the left engine compressor stalled which lasted 20-30 seconds. Tried to declare an emergency but out of radio contact due to precipitation. Squawked 7700 and transmitted in the blind. Once through turbulence which lasted 30 seconds to 1 min, the compressor stall cleared. Passenger and flight attendants had been instructed to take seats with belts fastened approximately 2-3 mins prior to the incident. WX radar showed no significant returns within 25-30 mi of aircraft. Diverted to tpa for required inspections. Landed uneventfully and no injuries reported.
