Narrative:

After doing the appropriate checklist, we departed syr. Upon reaching positive rate, I called for the gear up. The nose gear retracted, but the mains did not. At this time I thought I knew what the problem might be. I asked the flight engineer to make sure we had the gear pins on board. We did not. Somehow she had missed them during her preflight and before start checklist. In the meantime, we tried the gear 1 more time, and had the same result. At this time I decided to return for landing. We were set up for a perfect downwind leg and the airport was in sight. We landed and the mechanic ran to the airplane. He knew what the problem was because he didn't come over to talk with me out the window at all. He pulled the pins, threw them up to the door and gave us the 'start engine' sign. We departed the ramp 2 mins from the time we blocked in. We continued on to dayton with no problems. Where I made my mistake was on the ramp. I didn't get re-released.

Title: A B727 RETURNED TO LAND WHEN THE MAIN GEAR WOULD NOT RETRACT AFTER TKOF. THE FLC DISCOVERED THAT THE GEAR PINS HAD NOT BEEN REMOVED FROM THE MAIN GEAR. IN THE HURRY TO DEPART, AGAIN THE CAPT FORGOT TO GET A NEW RELEASE.
