Narrative:
On jun/xa/96 at approximately XA00Z-XA15Z, I was PIC carrying a passenger on a flight from lgb to L32, a 45 min flight. We did some preflight planning and decided to take the coast route. We contacted socal approach and requested flight following. We were navigating to oceanside VOR. Socal approach told us to squawk VFR, frequency change approved. I started a descent to oceanside airport. Staying over the coast, we looked over to the east and saw an airport that we determined was oceanside. We both were not familiar with this area. I called oceanside unicom 123.00 asking runway conditions. They were using runway 24. I called my 10 mi out was going to be entry on a 45 degree for runway 24. Then about 5 mi out we could see no activities and saw helicopters parked along the runway. I made a 180 degree turn and climbed out back to the ocean shore line. In summing this statement up, there were mistakes made and I as PIC will be more careful in the future of restr areas.
