Narrative:
During arrival on STAR, the flight was never handed off from ZTL to atl approach control. Upon query by the flight crew, the changeover was made to atl approach control within just a few mi of the field. No known conflict occurred, but approach control requested that we 'call them on the ground.' ZTL claimed to have attempted to contact us with the frequency. When we called with request for instructions, they sounded surprised and asked us our position. We feel that we were momentarily forgotten about by center. We could have possibly noticed and called sooner. (Ie, at point on STAR with 'expect vectors for approach') to avoid this miscom.
