Narrative:
Hot and hazy day, runway 6 in use at hnz. I had the CTAF on while doing my preflight checks at the approach end of runway 6. Unknown to me, an airplane had approached and landed on runway 24 while I did run-ups, etc. I checked both ends of the runway, saw no traffic, made my departure radio call and started takeoff. Just before rotation speed I noticed other airplane on runway. I had enough room to rotate and sideslip to the right, and missed other airplane by a good margin, but the incident still was scary. Airport employee called me on CTAF, asked if I'd seen airplane. I replied yes, just prior to rotation, but that I'd heard nothing on the radio. He said he hadn't either. Incidents like this can be prevented by: using your radio at uncontrolled fields, obtaining an airport advisory -- which runway is in use, and exercising great care on hot muggy days -- heat rising from runway may distort your view of objects at the other end.

Title: RPTR PVT PLT SAW ACFT ON HIS TKOF RWY JUST BEFORE ROTATING. TOOK EVASIVE ACTION. OTHER ACFT HAD NOT CALLED ON CTAF.
Narrative: HOT AND HAZY DAY, RWY 6 IN USE AT HNZ. I HAD THE CTAF ON WHILE DOING MY PREFLT CHKS AT THE APCH END OF RWY 6. UNKNOWN TO ME, AN AIRPLANE HAD APCHED AND LANDED ON RWY 24 WHILE I DID RUN-UPS, ETC. I CHKED BOTH ENDS OF THE RWY, SAW NO TFC, MADE MY DEP RADIO CALL AND STARTED TKOF. JUST BEFORE ROTATION SPD I NOTICED OTHER AIRPLANE ON RWY. I HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO ROTATE AND SIDESLIP TO THE R, AND MISSED OTHER AIRPLANE BY A GOOD MARGIN, BUT THE INCIDENT STILL WAS SCARY. ARPT EMPLOYEE CALLED ME ON CTAF, ASKED IF I'D SEEN AIRPLANE. I REPLIED YES, JUST PRIOR TO ROTATION, BUT THAT I'D HEARD NOTHING ON THE RADIO. HE SAID HE HADN'T EITHER. INCIDENTS LIKE THIS CAN BE PREVENTED BY: USING YOUR RADIO AT UNCTLED FIELDS, OBTAINING AN ARPT ADVISORY -- WHICH RWY IS IN USE, AND EXERCISING GREAT CARE ON HOT MUGGY DAYS -- HEAT RISING FROM RWY MAY DISTORT YOUR VIEW OF OBJECTS AT THE OTHER END.
