Narrative:
Attitude indicator failed in flight IMC cruise. The unit was a 6 month old rebuilt, installed when autoplt was installed. The front glass separated from case causing problem. All vacuum was lost and standby vacuum did not function because of leak at instrument. Result: lost momentary (2-3 seconds) control of the airplane resulting in an altitude excursion of about 700 ft. Declared an emergency after regaining control of airplane, descended to VFR and landed at blm. GPS found airport because mcguire radar OTS. Ny approach helped with vectors. Backup electronic gyroscope would have been useful. Had nothing to cover ADI which caused distraction till covered with paper.
