Narrative:
On initial climb, complying with the SID, the vertical climb mode was inadvertently changed from mcdu 'controled vertical navigation' to 'open climb.' mode change went unnoticed by both pilots. Consequently an altitude restr on the climb SID was missed by 800 ft. Human performance consideration: mode change awareness in advanced automated cockpits. Supplemental information from acn 339078: we were cleared the 'remainder of the SID, to comply with the restrs.' I thought we were cleared to 12000 ft, the PNF said we were cleared to FL230. I dialed in FL230 and pulled the knob, engaging open climb and overriding the 12000 ft restr programmed into the mcdu -- we climbed to 12800 before catching the error -- I did not realize there was an error being made.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LGT CREW OVERSHOT ITS CLB ALT ON A SID. ALTDEV.
Narrative: ON INITIAL CLB, COMPLYING WITH THE SID, THE VERT CLB MODE WAS INADVERTENTLY CHANGED FROM MCDU 'CTLED VERT NAV' TO 'OPEN CLB.' MODE CHANGE WENT UNNOTICED BY BOTH PLTS. CONSEQUENTLY AN ALT RESTR ON THE CLB SID WAS MISSED BY 800 FT. HUMAN PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATION: MODE CHANGE AWARENESS IN ADVANCED AUTOMATED COCKPITS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 339078: WE WERE CLRED THE 'REMAINDER OF THE SID, TO COMPLY WITH THE RESTRS.' I THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 12000 FT, THE PNF SAID WE WERE CLRED TO FL230. I DIALED IN FL230 AND PULLED THE KNOB, ENGAGING OPEN CLB AND OVERRIDING THE 12000 FT RESTR PROGRAMMED INTO THE MCDU -- WE CLBED TO 12800 BEFORE CATCHING THE ERROR -- I DID NOT REALIZE THERE WAS AN ERROR BEING MADE.
