Narrative:

On a part 121 flight from rap to den, about 30 mi northeast of den, cleared visual approach to runway 17R. Had field in sight, clear VFR day. Intercepted GS, on a heading to intercept localizer, ran checklist, looked back up at runway. Still 'looked' to be northeast of runway, but localizer showed through the course, then tower called and asked if we were visual for runway 17R. At that time I realized I had visual on stapelton. We told tower we had flown through final and were given a vector back through runway 16 final for runway 17R. We had no traffic conflicts, and tower did not say anything to us. Two things may have prevented this: running the checklist sooner, and relying on the instruments, even when what you see visually tells you something different.

Narrative: ON A PART 121 FLT FROM RAP TO DEN, ABOUT 30 MI NE OF DEN, CLRED VISUAL APCH TO RWY 17R. HAD FIELD IN SIGHT, CLR VFR DAY. INTERCEPTED GS, ON A HDG TO INTERCEPT LOC, RAN CHKLIST, LOOKED BACK UP AT RWY. STILL 'LOOKED' TO BE NE OF RWY, BUT LOC SHOWED THROUGH THE COURSE, THEN TWR CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE VISUAL FOR RWY 17R. AT THAT TIME I REALIZED I HAD VISUAL ON STAPELTON. WE TOLD TWR WE HAD FLOWN THROUGH FINAL AND WERE GIVEN A VECTOR BACK THROUGH RWY 16 FINAL FOR RWY 17R. WE HAD NO TFC CONFLICTS, AND TWR DID NOT SAY ANYTHING TO US.
