Narrative:

Runway 26L had been shortened due to construction. Remaining runway was minimal. A back taxi was required to the beginning of the runway. In an attempt to avail myself of all the available runway, I decided to taxi on a portion of the runway that had been repainted with chevrons. In doing so, I inadvertently taxied across a line of conduit used as an electrical line for runway lighting. I was a new captain with 50 hours. At the time I was unsure of the availability of those areas for use, but knew this area had been, and would again be used as runway, and therefore would sustain the weight.
