Narrative:
VMC condition, VFR pattern to controled airport. C172 traffic was called out on 3 NM final as we are midfield on downwind. We are concentrating on C172 to assure good spacing and start our turn to base, lower gear and start before landing checklist. Tower clears us for touch-and-go and we start turn to final. I'm training new pilot who is flying left seat. I'm 'inside' completing checklist as he, trainee, turns final. Passenger in back asks if we had the other aircraft in sight. By then we had completed our turn onto final and the left seat pilot has the traffic turning and climbing on the left side. I asked tower where the traffic came from but they had no information on it and were not in communication with the aircraft. The aircraft had apparently shot a practice ILS without clearing with anyone and transited the airport area without clearance. In the future if I'm doing a checklist, I'll stop to clear final and assure the other pilot does also.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CORP ACFT ON FINAL HAS A POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH ANOTHER CORP ACFT WHO IS NORAC. TA NOT GIVEN BY TWR AS TFC WAS UNKNOWN VFR TFC. TRAINING IN PROGRESS IN BOTH ACFT.
Narrative: VMC CONDITION, VFR PATTERN TO CTLED ARPT. C172 TFC WAS CALLED OUT ON 3 NM FINAL AS WE ARE MIDFIELD ON DOWNWIND. WE ARE CONCENTRATING ON C172 TO ASSURE GOOD SPACING AND START OUR TURN TO BASE, LOWER GEAR AND START BEFORE LNDG CHKLIST. TWR CLRS US FOR TOUCH-AND-GO AND WE START TURN TO FINAL. I'M TRAINING NEW PLT WHO IS FLYING L SEAT. I'M 'INSIDE' COMPLETING CHKLIST AS HE, TRAINEE, TURNS FINAL. PAX IN BACK ASKS IF WE HAD THE OTHER ACFT IN SIGHT. BY THEN WE HAD COMPLETED OUR TURN ONTO FINAL AND THE L SEAT PLT HAS THE TFC TURNING AND CLBING ON THE L SIDE. I ASKED TWR WHERE THE TFC CAME FROM BUT THEY HAD NO INFO ON IT AND WERE NOT IN COM WITH THE ACFT. THE ACFT HAD APPARENTLY SHOT A PRACTICE ILS WITHOUT CLRING WITH ANYONE AND TRANSITED THE ARPT AREA WITHOUT CLRNC. IN THE FUTURE IF I'M DOING A CHKLIST, I'LL STOP TO CLR FINAL AND ASSURE THE OTHER PLT DOES ALSO.
