Narrative:

Crew failed to make initial descent from FL330 to FL240 by the designated fix. This fix was not (previously) programmed into aircraft omega and during the time the crew idented and programmed the fix, they were too close in to make their descent restr. Failure of the crew to xchk conventional navigation equipment resulted in a short loss of situational awareness, hence a late descent. Crews must be reminded that omega information must be crosschecked with conventional navigation equipment at all times. Possibly helpful but probably too difficult would be a 'heads up' to crews from ATC (heading/distance) when they introduce a 'new' fix to air crews.

THIS FIX WAS NOT (PREVIOUSLY) PROGRAMMED INTO ACFT OMEGA AND DURING THE TIME THE CREW IDENTED AND PROGRAMMED THE FIX, THEY WERE TOO CLOSE IN TO MAKE THEIR DSCNT RESTR. CREWS MUST BE REMINDED THAT OMEGA INFO MUST BE XCHKED WITH CONVENTIONAL NAV EQUIP AT ALL TIMES. POSSIBLY HELPFUL BUT PROBABLY TOO DIFFICULT WOULD BE A 'HEADS UP' TO CREWS FROM ATC (HDG/DISTANCE) WHEN THEY INTRODUCE A 'NEW' FIX TO AIR CREWS.
