Narrative:
Center gave us descent clearance, but his transmission was barely readable. I read back 8000 ft assigned and put that into the altitude alerter. Center came back to us and repeated 9000 ft as the cleared altitude. I rogered 9000 ft, but failed to change the alerter. The aircraft on autoplt descended to 8000 ft. Center radioed (transmission again broken and barely readable) that 8000 ft was ok even though 9000 ft had been assigned. Contributing factor: poor radio reception.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: COM POOR. MISREAD ALT, ASSIGNED 9000 FT, BUT OVERSHOT BY 1000 FT. NO CONFLICT. LTT.
Narrative: CTR GAVE US DSCNT CLRNC, BUT HIS XMISSION WAS BARELY READABLE. I READ BACK 8000 FT ASSIGNED AND PUT THAT INTO THE ALT ALERTER. CTR CAME BACK TO US AND REPEATED 9000 FT AS THE CLRED ALT. I ROGERED 9000 FT, BUT FAILED TO CHANGE THE ALERTER. THE ACFT ON AUTOPLT DSNDED TO 8000 FT. CTR RADIOED (XMISSION AGAIN BROKEN AND BARELY READABLE) THAT 8000 FT WAS OK EVEN THOUGH 9000 FT HAD BEEN ASSIGNED. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: POOR RADIO RECEPTION.
